Kroes 'American Culture In European Metaphors'

Europe has always had a certain perception of the United States and their culture. Kroes describes all the preconceived ideas the Europeans had of the ‘New World’. The United States had to represent something, images were projected by the Europeans onto the United States. As Kroes says in his text American Culture in European Metaphors “America was invented before it was discovered” (Kroes 1). This is a very good quote because the New World was imagined in terms of ideas, fantasies, and dreams. The idea of a clean slate “it is a hopeful version that looks on America as offering the possibility of renewal, rejuvenation, to a European culture that is old, weary, and decadent (Kroes 13).
