The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.

While it was originally started in 1865 in Tennessee, the terrorist organization wasn’t reborn until around the 1920’s, after the Civil War had just been resolved. Due to cultural conflict and modernization that was occurring, the KKK was officially resuscitated, and stronger than ever. The name Ku Klux Klan is derived from the Greek word kyklos meaning “circle” and the Scottish-Gaelic word “clan,” and was founded by several esteemed soldiers, all of whom were part of the Confederate army. Some of the more well known of these men were John B. Kennedy and James R. Crowe, both of whom participated in the hateful crimes of the KKK.

Over 2000 Kansas citizens were murdered during the election, also; Georgia has increased number of beatings and threats than their counterparts, while in Louisiana; 1000 Blacks were killed before the election because of the level of violence. In addition to this, the founder of the KKK is Nathan Bedford Forrest, who served in the Grand Wizard; and was equally a former Confederate general. In early 1868, Nathan played a significant role in establishing another new KKK that later spread around; also, in early 1868 to 1870s, the Klan operates as a political and social terrorist that had a goal to defeat their Republican political party.
