In the past, racism was more common than it is today, but the Ku Klux Klan is synonymous with racism. The Ku Klux Klan was a group that later evolved into many separate groups that practiced violence and intimidation against black Americans and/or people who didn’t meet their ideal religion or race. This included black people, republicans, Jewish immigrants, and Catholic immigrants. The original Ku Klux Klan group originated in Pulaski, Tennessee, which soon spread to almost every southern state in America. Although the Ku Klux Klan excluded many whites who did not qualify, it devoted itself to intimidating anyone who did not agree with their ideas. This is where the havoc began to spread to almost every southern state in the United States. The name of the Ku Klux Klan was made from kuklos, a Greek word that means “circle.” This word was picked as it represents a circle/group of brothers. Klan is simply the word “clan”, but with a K to correspond to kuklos. The Klan had members from all southern states by 1870. While all of this chaos was occurring in the South, most of the Northerners were appalled by these disturbing events. When the second outbreak of the Ku Klux Klan began in Atlanta, Georgia, it was even larger than before. Not just the South, but the whole nation contained members of the Ku Klux Klan (History). The second group of the Ku Klux Klan continued to have most popularity in Georgia (Britannica). Even though the second Klan definitely sprouted with even more members than the first Klan, this Klan has decreased dramatically. This Klan still exists today, but doesn’t have nearly as many members anymore. It is also expected to lose more members in the near future.
