The Killer Angels follows the three day long, decisive battle of Gettysburg during the United States Civil War. The book’s storytelling is purely chronological, as the story progresses our perspective is flip flopped between the Union and Confederate sides of the battle, however the story is consistently told in the 3rd person. Michael Shaara uses immense details when describing this battle and does an incredible job of describing every character and scene, making everything easy to visualize and allowing you to put yourself in the story. The story reveals to us the thought process of all the seemingly fearless military leaders, as they discuss battle strategies and how to outsmart their opponent. Perry will tell the his story and how the war strain you physically and mentally. Jenkins n the story was a young man following his father wishes about being a officer even if he was completely terrified. His death even at the end of the story effected Perry.
When looking at the back cover of Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels, positive reviews of the book, and a brief summary can be seen. The summary begins, “In the four most bloody and courageous days of our nation’s history, two armies fought for two conflicting dreams.” But after reading the book, one would realize that every single soldier on either side for their own personal reasons, that may not have had anything to do with the war.
Sandra Cisneros and Dwight Okita are writers, who are greatly influenced by American culture. Both authors discuss and establish the topic of American identity in “Response to Executive Order 9066” and “Mericans.” Okita defines “American identity” as the connection and experience with culture rather than where your family originated from. Cisneros short story is about making sense of a culture instead of making assumptions based on physical characters. However, both establish that the physical appearance of a person and their heritage do not determine what it means to be American.

He eventually obtained this success and became one of the pillars of America but not without suffering along the way. In the piece “Alexander Hamilton”, Miranda depicts Hamilton as a Hispanic minority who overcame an abundance of struggles and hardships in order to obtain a better and more fruitful life. Although some readers might think that the song “Alexander Hamilton” is simply about Hamilton’s life and the adversity he has overcame, it is in fact symbolic of modern day immigrant’s desire to pursue the main land’s american dream along with the obstacles and oppression they must overcome to do so.

In the novel, Our America by LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman makes us connect to today’s society and ourselves. Our American novel illustrates two strong young men facing struggles and surviving tragedies. Throughout the novel, we come across pictures that evokes their stories sufferings and deaths. My feelings and reactions towards my chapter and the whole book are indignant and crestfallen. While reading chapter three I realized that I could not relate to LeAlan and Lloyd situations at school in some parts.
Much of targeted audience hailed from the United States, and seemed content with simply fleeing from the chaos, placing the thoughts of their homeland into a dark corner of their mind. However, Cary brings back their repressed patriotic feelings, placing the United States as a center of one of her arguments. Personifying America, Cary states that “as the great country grows, we grow with it; as it improves and progresses, we are carried forward on the bosom of its onward tide”. Commonly, Americans refer to the United States as a mother, and one of the most comforting places of a mother will always be the warmth and protectiveness of her bosom. Here, Cary refers to the United States as a mother, mentioning one of the most warm and protective places on her: the bosom.
The first important theme in the foreword to The Killer Angels is how the objective of the army was to draw The Union Army out into the open where it can be destroyed. Although many of the men could not read or write, they all share common customs and a common faith in following a victorious leader that lead the march. Second important theme in the foreword was the description to the major characters in the armies. This book takes place during the Battle of Gettysburg so it describes the men of the troops for both Confederate and The Union. For example, James Longstreet a Lieutenant General was on the first of the new soldiers that had sensed the birth of the new war machine.
In the 1980s, during the apogee of the AIDS crisis, many conservatives came forward to blame the homosexual community for the epidemic. For instance, according to Armstrong, Lam, and Chase, Kaposi’s sarcomas, along with other diseases, make up a list of conditions that serves as a guideline for the diagnosis of AIDS. In fact, its relation to AIDS is so remarkable that it became a label; in a society that is divided by pre-conceived ideas of morality, it became a visual representation of HIV as a punishment for homosexuality. However, in Angels in America: a Gay Fantasia on National Themes, Tony Kushner attributes a greater meaning to the lesions caused by Kaposi’s sarcoma – from death sentence to change, and finally, to redemption. These lesions symbolize the lethality that comes with AIDS, and how it has shaped the sense of community amongst homosexuals.
As a result, some may feel that they have no presence in America because their expected help is nowhere to be found, once again shown by the prevalence of hardships. Specifically, the essay explores the central theme of American identity in the two literary works. The “Mericans” is about a little girl who has a story about the new world and the old world. In this case, the new world is America.
In the musical West Side Story, the portrayal of the “Jets” and the “Sharks” highlight the issues of race and ethnicity that impact the formation of identity. In an article, “On Broadway”, Sylviane Gold argues that “musicals have reflected and perpetuated the racial rifts and injustices of American society” (81).
