Terrance Hayes was born in 1971 in Columbia, South Carolina. He not only is a writer but a successful artist and athlete as well. In this book a girl named Melinda was drunk and got raped at a back to school party. And all she can do is think to call the police for help, but she doesn't realize that she is about to get almost everyone in there school busted for drinking. Everyone finds out she called the police at the party and everyone neglects and hates her for getting them in trouble.

Melinda is also conflicted about her individuality and questions if she can trust anyone with being herself.

The theme of this book is finding your voice because Melinda was assaulted before she even went to high school. And the way it was written, it was meant to send that message. All books are meant to have a message but this seems to want that message to get across to people.
The theme of self growth and isolation can be seen throughout the novel Speak (1999) by Laurie Halse Anderson, which follows the main protagonist, Melinda Sordino through her freshman year. When Melinda is first introduced, she mentions a secret that she is afraid to talk to anyone about. Melinda later reveals to the readers that she was raped by a high school senior at an end of summer party. Everyone at school acts hostile towards Melinda for calling the cops and ruining what was the best night of their lives, unbeknown to them, that night still haunts her dreams. This causes Melinda to become isolated from everyone, as they only see her as the freak who called the cops.

In the novel Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, Melinda is the main character in the novel and is affected by sexual assault herself. Melinda is one of the 5 to 20 percent who stay silent after she was sexually assaulted by who Melinda calls “IT”, Andy Evans. Anderson uses trees as motifs to support the theme of how Melinda’s social life is as the school year progresses.

Speak is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson which tells the story about a girl who was raped but does not tell anyone about it. She goes through this trauma alone. She was raped at a party while she was alone with a handsome senior named Andy in the woods. She has been quiet ever since it happened. The novel makes you feel what she is experiencing in present time.
In Talk in the intimate relationship : his and hers Deborah Tannen talks about how men and women in a relationship talk and interpret what their significant other is saying and if they are interested in the discussion. Women and men speak differently, women can figure out more details of a situation by reading between the lines. Men are not as likely to pick up on subtle hints and cues during a conversation. At a young age how boys and girls communicate start to communicate differently. Once children reach school age they hang out with the same sex more frequently.

As a coming-of-age contemporary novel, Speak discusses many sensitive issues that are still prominent even today. In this story, we explore the life of Melinda Sordino, a fourteen-year-old girl who is beginning high school right after experiencing an utterly traumatic event: rape. Melinda is left friendless, with no one to help and support her after what happened.
Isolation is when one is set apart from others and is virtually alone. In Laurie Anderson’s Speak, the protagonist, Melinda, isolates herself and is further isolated from others. Isolation can be seen through three symbols: lips, mirrors and a closet. Melinda thinks no one cares about what she has to say, resulting in silence. After the incident in the summer, Melinda cannot bare to look at herself.

This is because she called the cops at a party, where she was raped. Anderson includes literary elements to show how Melinda is depressed. Throughout the novel, she uses many different literary elements to show Melinda’s conflict.
Watching the "Fireproof" movie, I was able to distinguish several interpersonal communication problems between the main characters. Interpersonal communication is the methods by which people get involved in the conversation to exchange message, information, and feelings to each other both verbally and non-verbally(Stewart, 2012). Every individual has their ideas and approaches to communicate to others. Our processes of communication display as our behavior which causes either success or failure in relationships.
