Being generous is rewarding to the people who give their generosity to the world and the people who receive it. Lady Seymour displays generosity throughout the novel Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson. Lady Seymour showed generosity by giving Isabel food when needed, nursing her back to health when she was sick, and giving her clean clothes. When Isabel comes into Lady Seymour's house she immediately gets a proper greeting “Lady Seymour poured me a mug of fresh milk. My surprise at having a proper lady do so must have shown on my face.” (pg 65 pdf) This shows that Lady Seymour was welcoming and kind to Isabel when she only paid a small visit. This was done to welcome Isabel into Lady Seymour's home. Lady Seymour did this out of pure generosity and kindness. This reveals Lady Seymour's generosity and how she is a proper lady, making Isabel feel loved and cared for. This connects to the character trait by showing the readers more about Lady Seymour, how she isn't an evil wretched woman like Anne Lockton, and how Lady Seymour is a sweet and generous woman unlike most women and how they treated slaves at the time. …show more content…

Even when Isabel worked for Lady Seymour, Lady Seymour still showed her kindness. “Lady Seymour made sure I ate a proper three meals a day and let me sleep in the attic bedchamber.” Unlike Mrs. Lockton, Lady Seymour ensured Isabel was cared for by giving her food and ensuring she had a place to sleep. This was done out of pure generosity, showing that Lady Seymour is a proper housekeeper. This reveals that even though Lady Seymour is still using Isabel for her work, that doesn't mean that she has to be rude and bossy towards her. This affects the story by showing that even though Isabel is a slave, she isn't a robot that can just be commanded to do something; she is a real human with feelings that can be loved and cared
