Shackled is a suspenseful and thrilling novel written by novelist Tom Leveen. The story centers on sixteen year old Pelly, who was traumatized by the kidnapping of her friend Tara years ago at a mall. After multiple therapy sessions, medications, and mental treatments, Pelly feels like she can return back to her normal life and live like a normal teenage girl. Just as she´s ready to step out into the real world once more, her life takes an unexpected three hundred sixty degree turn. One morning, as she´s working at a local cafe shop, an odd man and young, timid girl walk in.
The book Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, has two scenes where a river is brought up, but each have two different moods. In the first scene (pg. 147), the main character Isabel is in a stockade about to be branded. Several thoughts go through her mind like wanting to cry a river to escape to freedom, creating a depressed mood. In the second scene (pg. 167), Isabel is overhearing chatter around the tea water pump and notices some slaves arguing over which side- the patriots or the loyalists-they should choose to earn their freedom. At this point Grandfather, a character that regularly meets at the tea water pump, joins the conversation and gives advice, creating a mood that is reassuring.
One of the things that makes the Lions of Little Rock such a revolutionary and fruitful novel for theme is how it plays with the ideas of freedom. The main character Marlee starts off the novel with a reluctant and cynical perception of community, but decides to make a change after meeting Liz. Liz provides to Marlee what not even she can, and that’s the receptive comfort of loving Marlee for who she is. Liz, at least to me, is one of the most cultured and thorough characters to be penned in a book because she invokes a sense of real happiness. One beautiful example that ties the two together is when they are separated.
The novel continues the stories of the refugees and the struggle they face as they begin to settle into their lives in Clarkston. The refuges continue to face rising tensions between the locals and the fugees face the pressure of the rules Luma sets and place as well as from school. The book introduces refugee, Paula Balegamire and her five children, from the Democratic Republic of Congo. They escaped Africa’s deadliest conflict, her husband was imprisoned and not released so she made the decision to leave Brazzaville and the UNHCR relocated her to the apartment complexes of Clarkston.

Before his senior prank, he was a nobody but afterwards, he caught everyone's attention, including his fellow classmate Bethany Millbury. He also has a younger sister named Hannah and a best friend named who he calls "Yoda."
Albert Camus once said, “The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion" (Murphy 1). She is also banned from trial by jury and a right to a council. Lastly Isabel is not given the right that protects her from cruel and unusual punishment.

hains opens with a funeral, which pretty much tells us up front that it 's going to be a pretty bleak story. Isabel, our heroine, and her younger sister, Ruth, are attending the burial of their owner, Miss Mary Finch. The occasion presents a great deal of hope for Isabel and Ruth, as Miss Finch planned to free the girls in her will. When Isabel confronts Miss Finch 's brother about this, though, he basically thinks she 's making it up. To make matters worse, her lawyer is stuck in Boston, where a major uprising has just taken place over the British colonies ' desire for independence.
In one example, while Charles was in prison as a political prisoner the landlords were mercilessly evicting people, despite the no rent manifesto, which caused countless people to become homeless. So, Anna decided the best use of the money was to have prefabricated houses sent from Dublin to make sure no family went without shelter, but this went against Charles 's wishes as he deemed the donations as his political contributions to enact change at the legislative level. To top this off, the male prisoners had quality meals made by the governor 's kitchen while receiving a stipend every day. This occurred while the petticoats were out in the streets being verbally harassed by irritated tenants, landlords and had to work under extreme conditions while trying to stabilize both organizations while maintaining their sanity. The final nail in the coffin for the sibling bond between Anna and Charles happened after the Land Leaguers were released from prison.

I, Isabel Gardener, write this letter to you, gentlemen of the Continental Congress, urging you to grant me freedom. Acknowledging your valuable time, I have gone through documents and have recorded gruesome tragedies I have that are the cause of this horrible practice to help me prove my point. Slavery is unjust, as every person, including a slave, is entitled by God to have equality and freedom. As this country is seeking its freedom, there is no reason why a tormented slave cannot seek freedom as well. According to political documents and my experiences as a slave in New York, I deserve freedom.

It is an eye opener of how the government handles the sex market. “The Road of Lost Innocence” also demeans authority figures such as police officers, soldiers and highly important figures of society. One of the best examples in this book is when Srey Mom escapes the brothel and goes to the authorities to report the pimps who imprisoned her. The authorities take “her back to the brothel” (Mam 167) from where she escaped. Thru out the book, there is a constant struggle between authority and Mam’s AFESIP
In the novel Before We Were Free, Julia Alvarez explores the theme of freedom, in more depth, how freedom comes at a cost. The main character, Anita, and her family are forced to leave their country to escape their dictator, Rafael Trujillo, of the Dominican Republic in order to be free. Although, nothing this serious would be executed without a cost. Lucinda, Anita’s older sister, is forced to choose between accepting Turillo’s proposal to be his lover or go to the states and hope for her family to meet her there. Mami says that she doesn’t want her daughter to work as a maid in America, but then Papi cuts her off to say, “Would you prefer she be Mr. Smith’s little querida?(pg.69 p.6)”.
