Langston Hughes: The New Negro Movement

The sun was coming up over the horizon on a crisp fall day in New York. An African American man who is 5’4 was sitting on a park bench in the central park watching the sunrise and feeding the pigeons. This man’s name was Langston Hughes. Mr. Hughes was reflecting on his life as a creative, humble hard working, adventurous famous poet.
It all started on a frosty day of February 1st, 1902 when an African American boy was born to a loving couple in Joplin, Missouri. While growing up Langston’s parents got divorced and he ended up living with his grandmother until the age of 13. At that time, Langston moved in with his mother and her new husband. This interested me very much, so I wanted to learn more. This is what I found out. It is a bunch of African Americans trying to share with the world their experiences of what it was like growing up with slavery, how racism affects us and our concerns here in America. We wanted to share these experiences and our cultures through music, drawings, stories, poets and play writers just like the whites. I like this renaissance idea so I joined up. While I was with the Harlem Renaissance, I assisted with the launch of a magazine called “Fire”. The magazine was a magazine devoted to younger Negro youth artists who wanted to publish their short stories, drawings, and poetry for all to read. It was 56 pages long and had a red cover with an African lion silhouette on the cover in black. I loved the idea of giving our younger African Americans voices be heard. A lot of my poetry was influenced by my travels but also from jazz music. I wanted the world to hear about lives and experiences of the members of the black community. The Harlem renaissance gained awareness from all over the states and the world. I was proud to be a part of
