Introduction
Christians commemorate the last supper which is an important event in their calendar. During the event, Jesus shocked the disciples by stating that one of them was going to betray him. It is also at this point that Jesus offered bread and wine to the disciples who would represent his body and blood. Various Italian artists have presented painting of the same function which revolves around the Early Renaissance period, the High Renaissance period and the Baroque period. This essay will compare three paintings from the three periods to better understand the last supper as it was viewed by Christians.

The artist has also used a triangular shape to represent Christ who is sited at the middle (Spencer, 1991). There is also a clear balance with the apostles at either side of Christ.

Significance
This picture is important because it represents Jesus betrayal with the picture clearly demonstrating Judas who almost dips his hand on the bowl that Jesus had as he had earlier on mentioned about the person that would betray him. Judas is also holding a purse which contains that payment he got for betraying Jesus (King, 2012). Peter also who sits beside Jesus holds a knife which also signifies that he would cut the soldier’s year as he attempt to resist his arrest.
Composition
In this picture, Leonardo has successfully placed Jesus at the centre with the apostles surrounding him (King, 2012). Jesus is painted in a triangle shape with no apostle overlapping him thus represents the holy trinity.

During the early Renaissance period, artists commonly used triangular shapes to highlight the focal point with minimal movements. This period was associated with the need to represent nature and beauty due to the cultural changes that took place after the plague and war which took away so many lives in Italy. In the high Renaissance period, there are evident movements with various lines used to indicate the apostles as they sought to understand who would represent Jesus. This period represented political stability and inventions which were facilitated by technological advancements. The Baroque period was a total transformation with more movements evident in the paintings. The Catholic Church at this time wanted paintings that would bring out emotions and represent the reality.
