Similarly, there are many cognitive shifts that can happen during late adulthood. People are more likely to remain strong in specific cognitive abilities, such as problem solving skills (559). Poe has seen his problem solving remain strong he feels it is due to the fact he constantly learns new things. For example, he says he will add up the cost of items at the grocery store, and he reads the Washington Post in the morning. Further, when ask if noticed changes in his intellectual functioning, such as numeric ability or verbal ability he was certain that he has not has a decline in any of these functions. Chronic disease is not something Poe has dealt with, since he doesn’t have arthritis, diabetes, and more. Also, he doesn’t take any medication for heart or cholesterol. Certainly, a marriage to a bright spouse plays a role in his lack of intellectual decline (560). Also, people have a short memory capacity as the get older, especially in their short-term memory, were it has a relative steady decline after the age 70. Poe admits his sort-term memory gives him the most trouble, and he doesn’t like it when people force him to admit he forgot something they just talked about. He says, “it is just old age.” Consequently, he does feel he has an excellent attention span, and actually enjoys spending a few hours fiddling on the internet or reading the newspaper. So, it is possible that he has little change in the ability to pay attention to and planning tasks relating to memory skills (562). Information processing deficit consequently leads to a decline in the ability to recall information. Additionally, everyone tends to remember a period of time in their life more frequently.
