My understanding of Chapter 15 and the videos has changed about my view of the cognitive functioning of late adulthood. According to the Development Psychology textbook, the definition of late adulthood is when citizens are around their sixties or seventies and last until death. Life expectancy is the number of years that a person will live if they were born in a particular time. Also the United State is ranked fifth in the life expectancy which is seventy-eight years old. Also the cause of life expectancy can be based on the gender. For example, a females might live longer than males because they are more resistance to infections and degenerative diseases than males. I learned the difference between Alzhemier’s disease and dementia, some of the different type of theories, and three important influences on the cognitive functioning of older adults from Chapter 15 and the video. These important information changed my view of the cognitive functioning of late adulthood.

All of these theories are biological theories that explains why we age. Free radical theory is defined that natural selection has eliminated harmful conditions such as damaging DNA and other cellular structures. For exampls, researchers found that older people having a diet on the number of calories can reduce the oxidative created by free radicals(Santrock,2014). Next is Cellular Clock theory is a theory that was made up Lenorad Hayflick. Hayflick states that cells can divide 75 to 80 as people age. Also,Hayflick does not have knowlege why cells die during late adulthood. Hormonal Stress Theory is the aging in the body’s hormonal system that increases the late adulthood of having diseases. As people age, their immune system decreases which give risk to infectious diseases. From all these theories, they do not explain the aging
