Ezra Jones Mrs. Grissinger 9H ELA 29 March 2023 The usage of Caesura, Enjambment, and Metaphor to Describe the Power of Laughter There can be many times when one would feel like David to another person’s Goliath, which enables feelings of fear and intimidation. Some confront their problems to persevere through tough times, others pray, and some laugh. In the poem “Laughter”, Floria Renaud uses enjambment, metaphor, and allusion to help the reader infer that once an individual finds what helps them defeat struggles and adversity, there is not one Goliath who will not be beaten. The poem starts with the biblical allusion to David and Goliath, including multiple caesuras to elicit thought in the reader of the words chosen. The first two lines allude to David and Goliath, but the implicit commas are present to slow the reader down and help the reader to understand how much gravity the allusion that David and Goliath has. “As David chose, to slay Goliath,/ A sling with pebbles small and round,/ and nothing else at all”(1-3), once the commas have slowed the reader down, readers can start to picture the allusion. David, the youngest in his family, a shepherd boy, was set up to fight one of the best warriors known at the time. Though many thought David needed a profusion armor and a sword, he found pebbles small and round instead. However, those pebbles were enough to defeat goliath. Once the gravity of the allusion is understood, now under inspection should be how the gravity is created. The first paragraph, “As David chose, to slay Goliath,/ A sling with pebbles small,/ so I would choose one weapon only/
