Odysseus and I have both shown leadership. In the Odyssey he was explaining to his men to tie him to the mast so he would not succumb to the sound of the sirens. Odysseus showed leadership by knowing he had to be available to lead his men, not under the spell of the Siren. Odysseus states “The lovely voices in ardor appealing over the water made me crave to listen, and I tried to say untie me!’ to the crew, jerking my brows; but the bent steady to the oars” (933).
In the odyssey, the king of ithica aka odysseus is on his way home, but on his way home he faces many challenges, some include the cyclops, and many different monsters. Eventually after a long hard fight, odysseus makes his way home. The odyssey gives a perfect example of what a hero is, and how easily it is for a person to change. At first, Odysseus may seem like a hero due to his courage and strength, but later on in the story things take a turn for the worse for him and his reputation,
Odysseus defies the suitors and wins his wife and kingdom back. Despite Odysseus' overconfident nature, Odysseus proves he is a hero by showing bravery and intelligence. When it comes to being a hero, being brave is one of the most
American businessman, inventor, and industrial designer Steve Jobs once voiced, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” (brainyquote.com). Jobs’ voice illustrates that the people who want to make a difference are the ones that will excel and advance. Throughout Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, leadership plays a necessary and vital role. Some things that characterize successful male leadership in The Odyssey are determination and good relationships. Odysseus demonstrates his determination when his men release the winds when Ithaca was in sight on his journey home. “They screamed and I woke up, / and wondered if I should jump off the ship / and drown , or bite my lip, be stoical, / and stay among the living. I endured it, / covered my face, and lay on the deck.”
Another epic in which leadership is seen as a key theme is in Gilgamesh. In contrast to The Odyssey, Gilgamesh portrays bad leadership. Gilgamesh is a selfish, rude, and self-centered person at the beginning of the epic. He does things for his own good and satisfaction; some might even say he isn’t a leader at all. As stated earlier, courage is another important aspect of leadership.
Park Jisu Mr. Springs World Classics 1 11. January. 2023 The Odyssey: A Masterclass in Leadership The epic poem “The Odyssey” by Homer tells the story of Odysseus and his journey home after the victory in the war of Troy.
Odyssey displays many traits of leadership. First, his leadership is demonstrated when his crew obeys his commands. Homer’s text states that his crew “delivers me from my restraint.” Because his crew respects him, they obey him. As well as demonstrating strengths, he also portrays character weaknesses.
The leadership quality that both Odysseus and Ulysses portrays is concern. Concern means to worry about others when they’re in the need of help, no matter if it’s mentally or physically. Odysseus in the “Odyssey” portrays this in Homer’s Epic Poem; “The Lotus Eaters” on page 1112 and on line 44 - 49. On page 1112, Odysseus men ate the lotus flower and became bewitched to forget their homeland. As it states on line 44 - 49, “ But those who ate the honeyed plant, the Lotus never cared to report, nor return: they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland.
Some think Odysseus is a hero for many reasons, mainly because he helps many people including his family and his crew. Even when terrible things happen to him and his crew he perseveres and continues on his journey home. Even though Odysseus and his men do bad things like eating the sun god’s cattle there still are many reasons why he is a hero. One reason to support my claim is that he saves his crew many times. One example is when they sailed by the Sirens.
You must be made all of iron" (279-80). While Odysseus is a strong man and a hard worker, it is always better to be on his good side, as he can be very temperamental( third source). We see that he has a temper multiple times throughout his journey, but the most prominent time, perhaps, is when he has the suitors killed when he returns to Ithaca. In conclusion, Odysseus is a hero because of his many great qualities.
Bravery, cleverness, and determination are three traits a good leader has. In Homer’s epic “The Odyssey,” Odysseus, the hero in the story, is trying to return home to Ithaca after his victory in Troy. On their way back home, Odysseus and his men hurt the cyclops, Polyphemus, and angered his father, Poseidon. With a god angry at them, Odysseus and his men had to overcome many obstacles. These obstacles led them to strange islands that had goddesses and dangerous creatures.
No matter what is thrown at him he never stops trying to get home, getting past a Cyclopes, the Lady Circe, and sirens. He even gets through the Underworld and lives. Despite this, Odysseus does have faults about him, though not as many as there are qualities. He is a worldwide symbol, an archetype, of both nobility and bravery. Odysseus, the epic hero of the Odyssey, a great leader with many attributes as well as flaws, is no ordinary man.
