Continental Comparison In the essay “Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa” David Sedaris uses irony to show his disgust in his partner Hugh’s childhood experiences. He uses comparison to Hugh’s to display the differences between their upbringings. These writing techniques are used to make the point that everyone should appreciate their childhood because someone might have had a worse childhood than they have.
Lisa Delpit in Chapter 4 was questioning, What Should Teachers Do? Delpit was arguing as an educator that you shouldn’t force a child to speak English that’s from another country or culture. Constantly forcing the child will cause a gap in a relationship with the student; destroying confidence of learning and questioning or possibly even disrespecting. Instead of being too critical, Delpit states that you should learn the child’s culture/country to form a positive bond between the student and teacher. Davids life took a lucky turn. He clearly describes to the readers how determined he was to learn to speak the French language and how difficult it was. He made it easy to understand how the teacher constantly made him feel like a complete failure by constantly ridiculing him and the entire class, making him feel like he would never be able to properly speak French or even be able to understand it, thus causing him to work even harder. Sedaris’s conclusion was well written as he recalls the feeling he had when the teacher insulted him in class and he understood every word spoken to him for the first time. David was a journalist and the people at the fair really didn’t treat David right. They treated him as if he wasn’t important. David’s reaction to this was to act rudely to others but David knew that it wasn’t intentional toward him and that he needed to realize that.
At a small age is when David began to be abused by his mother, up to the age of 12, when he was finally taken away by Child Protective Services and put into the Foster Care system. Though through the years of being abused, David never once did he ever talk back, not do what he was told or anything along those lines. David was taught to believe in the same things but he does not understand where it is coming from. Thus, David is struggling to understand the meanings behind these sayings. This community has taught children from the day they were born to believe that even a slight difference is bad. It shows the cruelty of the society because they have only one world view and do not think any other views are considered right. Dialogue is used in a writing piece in order to move the plot, to develop or define the character, or just to deepen the conflict. All together, dialogue is used to help the reader infer the theme of the text. Sandra Cisneros expresses the theme throughout the novel with the use dialogue to develop the characters in The House on Mango Street which retells her life experiences that made her who she is today in vignettes just like No Speak English. In her other work of literature, Eleven she shows the same theme, with the addition of the theme that there is a certain amount of power held by age. In the texts Eleven and No Speak English by Sandra Cisneros, the use of dialogue helps reveal aspects of the characters in each piece in order to develop the theme of identity and belonging.
Since there are diverse groups of people around the world, it is not queer for them to have different beliefs, culture, opinions, and so forth. However, those kinds of differences sometimes cause an enormous problem to humanity like war, racism, and many more. It might start from a little thing like stereotyping or prejudicing in a small group of people until the worldwide one.
