Continental Comparison In the essay “Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa” David Sedaris uses irony to show his disgust in his partner Hugh’s childhood experiences. He uses comparison to Hugh’s to display the differences between their upbringings. These writing techniques are used to make the point that everyone should appreciate their childhood because someone might have had a worse childhood than they have.
Lisa Delpit in Chapter 4 was questioning, What Should Teachers Do? Delpit was arguing as an educator that you shouldn’t force a child to speak English that’s from another country or culture. Constantly forcing the child will cause a gap in a relationship with the student; destroying confidence of learning and questioning or possibly even disrespecting. Instead of being too critical, Delpit states that you should learn the child’s culture/country to form a positive bond between the student and teacher. Davids life took a lucky turn. Because of the injury sustained earlier, David was not allowed to do work that would require the use of his leg .Instead,Turnor agreed to allow David to join his apprenticeship classes. David was taught astronomy, surveying, mapping and how to use almanacs. David excelled in this area and HBC ended up offering him a contract to make new trade routes for trading with Aboriginal Peoples out West. He would also create new trading posts,, do land surveys and make maps.
If you were to change something about the education system in the U.S, what would you change? How would you critique the quality of education? Education historian Diane Ravitch answers these questions in her excerpt that was published in 2014, “The Essentials of a Good Education.” In her text Ravitch argues that the education system is flawed and that the vision of a good education is unfair and unequal. Ravitch supports her claim by providing examples of the negative effects of the educational system and using historical context.
The teacher’s approach to teaching is: The harder she pushes the students the harder they will work and the more they will learn. Some people might argue that this is not the proper way to learn. Many people would surely prefer a safe environment where it is okay to make a mistake and discuss issues in a language they are far more comfortable to speak. As a result of the teacher being so mean the students are frightened to speak. Though through hard times most people will often feel like it helps that you are not the only one struggling, something that the refugees most defi-nitely must be feeling when they arrive at a new country and has to learn a new language.
1. What are the turning points in the narrative? What are the most important things the writer seems to learn? The first turning point in the narrative is when Mr. Richard Rodriguez is in second grade.
He clearly describes to the readers how determined he was to learn to speak the French language and how difficult it was. He made it easy to understand how the teacher constantly made him feel like a complete failure by constantly ridiculing him and the entire class, making him feel like he would never be able to properly speak French or even be able to understand it, thus causing him to work even harder. Sedaris’s conclusion was well written as he recalls the feeling he had when the teacher insulted him in class and he understood every word spoken to him for the first time. David was a journalist and the people at the fair really didn’t treat David right. They treated him as if he wasn’t important. David’s reaction to this was to act rudely to others but David knew that it wasn’t intentional toward him and that he needed to realize that.
At a small age is when David began to be abused by his mother, up to the age of 12, when he was finally taken away by Child Protective Services and put into the Foster Care system. Though through the years of being abused, David never once did he ever talk back, not do what he was told or anything along those lines. He also never spoke up to anyone about what he was having to deal with at home. Though years later he did share his story with the world writing books about his childhood life, has even gone had public appearances which he shared his story. Allowing people to relive childhood, as if they were walking in his shoes.
Class ESL 5 In the article, ”My English” by Julia Alvarez, the author wrote about her experience as she learn to speak English. Spanish was her mother tongue and struggled to speak English in the early phases. She thought that English was a form of Spanish, as there are different dialects in Spanish. Her parents spoke English when they didn’t want her and her siblings to know what was going on.

David was taught to believe in the same things but he does not understand where it is coming from. Thus, David is struggling to understand the meanings behind these sayings. This community has taught children from the day they were born to believe that even a slight difference is bad. It shows the cruelty of the society because they have only one world view and do not think any other views are considered right. It is due to their ignorance towards acceptance that they are creating more trouble.
It is better to be a well-rounded student. All of these reasons knock extra French lessons out of the park. The first reason that she should leave the French lessons now. This is because her parents may see that she is struggling in her normal classes and pull her out of the French.
Dialogue is used in a writing piece in order to move the plot, to develop or define the character, or just to deepen the conflict. All together, dialogue is used to help the reader infer the theme of the text. Sandra Cisneros expresses the theme throughout the novel with the use dialogue to develop the characters in The House on Mango Street which retells her life experiences that made her who she is today in vignettes just like No Speak English. In her other work of literature, Eleven she shows the same theme, with the addition of the theme that there is a certain amount of power held by age. In the texts Eleven and No Speak English by Sandra Cisneros, the use of dialogue helps reveal aspects of the characters in each piece in order to develop the theme of identity and belonging.
Since there are diverse groups of people around the world, it is not queer for them to have different beliefs, culture, opinions, and so forth. However, those kinds of differences sometimes cause an enormous problem to humanity like war, racism, and many more. It might start from a little thing like stereotyping or prejudicing in a small group of people until the worldwide one. Have you ever prejudiced someone or been prejudiced by someone because you were associated with a particular group? Even though you have done nothing wrong, the people who wanted to prejudice you would probably see everything about you was a mistake.
