There is one group in society that you are always a part of that has taught you many valuable lessons about life. This group teaches you right from wrong, gives you a sense of community, and is something that will for the most part, always be there for you. This group is for your family. Whether we like to admit it or not, our family leaves lasting impressions on our identity and how we see the world. One skill that our family dynamic has a direct impact on is one’s literacy development. But, what is literacy about? Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write. This overarching theme is the development of literacy. One major concept of literacy and its development is family dynamics and environment. In Lee 2022, Yvonne Lee examines how literacy is multidirectional. Lee states, “Literacy development does indeed possess a multidirectional nature, moving back and forth along generational lines,” (Lee, 128). In simpler words, literacy development does not progress in just one direction, like from older generations to younger ones. Instead, literacy development consists of numerous interactions within various generations. These interactions occur in no specific direction, instead, one generation may impact its own or it may interact with older or younger ones. These interactions, whether we realize it or not, aid our literacy development and help individuals gain different perspectives regarding the way we interact with reading and writing. Moreover, Yvonne Lee’s work illustrates the importance of literacy development in the context of her own family.
