Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is centered around an unlikely pair of friends George is small and quick, and Lennie a man of prodigious size, has the mind of a young child. Yet they have formed a family, clinging together in the face of loneliness and isolation. During this arduous time period George gets caught in many worrisome situations with Lennie. Although George has always found a way to get Lennie out of them situations, George is now stuck between a rock and a hard place. Lennie has always put George in bad situations, but nothing like this Lennie has made a huge mistake he has killed a beautiful young lady. Lennie would have had to deal with the guilt of letting someone kill his best friend, When Curly found out that His wife was killed he knew immediately who had done it. On page 96 Curley stated “ I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. I’ll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I’ll shoot ‘im in the guts. Come on you guys.” If Lennie wouldn’t have shot Lennie before Curley got to him then George would have had to deal with the guilt thinking that Lennie died in a very unpeaceful way. George believes Lennie needs to die peacefully he doesn’t want him to be in pain and not realize why George wasn’t there to help him out of this situation. Another reason behind why George chose to shoot Lennie was because Lennie was suffering. Lennie was suffering because Lennie also suffers in a few ways, he suffers financially, mentally and socially. Since Lennie is not the smartest guy, it is very difficult for him to find work. He has a hard time listening and he has a very hard time making good decisions and therefore not many people want to hire him but George is there to help him find work but even though Lennie is able to find work he still is very low on cash because the ranch doesn't pay him what he deserves and what he does get paid is only just enough to live off.
