Of Mice and Men Essay In the book Of Mice and Men the two main characters George and Lennie are faced with a hard predicament at the end. Lennie is the huskier, tall, friend that has a loving heart but doesn't know his strengths due to the fact that he is mentally disabled. Don’t forget this book took place in the south during the 1930’s. Now George being the smaller one with a good head on him and having some smarts provided care for Lennie. George and Lennie are best friends, but George made a promise to Lennie’s aunt that he would take care of him once she passed. In the book Curley says “I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. I’ll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I’ll shoot ‘im in the guts.” If Lennie was to be shot in the guts by Curley would lead Lennie to have a slow painful death. Before George pulled the trigger on Lennie, George speaks of how they are going to get their stake and leave to live in their own place and live off the fatta the land. Lennie is most delightful when he hears about how he gets to tend the rabbits. Then George killed him by shooting him in the back of his head, making for a swift, and painless death killing Lennie instantly. Lennie went through everyday being called “stupid bastard”, or a retard. He never knew what was really going on. He tried to keep to himself. He never understands why the mice always died, and why he couldn’t take the pup away from his mother. He would be left clueless and still have no understanding. Every time Lennie messed up he would feel terrible even if it wasn't his fault. Like when he destroyed Curley’s hand. George took all of Lennie’s struggles away by killing him. He no longer had to be called names and treated
