In 1933, 12,000 black men, women, and children were killed during The Great Depression. In the novel “ Mice and Men “ by John Steinbeck there are two main characters, George and Lennie. Lennie is mentally ill and George tells people he got kicked in the head by a horse when he was baby. George told Lennie he wanted a little house and animals on it. So throughout the book Lennie says he wants to tend the rabbits. George did the right thing by killing lennie because Lennie couldn't make it on his own, Lennie would get into more trouble, and Lennie held George down. Lennie had to be watched over almost all the time to make sure he didn't get into trouble. On page 97 the author wrote, “ All the time he coulda had such a good time if it wasn't for you...but he took care of you instead.” This means that George could of done whatever he wanted to do, but he was too busy taking care of Lennie he couldn't. Lastly, Lennie would just continue to get into trouble. Lennie was mentally ill so he didn’t think before he did some stuff and he was to big to do some stuff. On page 15 the author stated, “ The struggle with mice is that you always kill them.” This means that every time Lennie tries to pet a small animal he kills it, not on purpose but by accident. Another example is on page 80 and it says, “ Lennie sat in the hay looking at the little dead pup lay in front of him.” George did the right thing by shooting Lennie himself, because Lennie couldn't make it on his own, Lennie held George down, and Lennie would continue to get into trouble. Lennie couldn't make it on his own, because he was mentally ill. Lennie held George down, because George had to take care of him 24/7. Lennie would continue to get into trouble, because he couldn’t think about what he was doing. This tells me that back then life was horrible. The author told us the truth about what happened back then and he wasn't supposed to. The book tells us that the people were inhumane back
