John Louis Evans, half of a well known criminal duo, committed over forty crimes while on parole with his partner, Wayne Ritter. Included in those many incidents were robberies, kidnappings, and extortion schemes. Eventually, these crimes turned deadly when the pair killed a pawn shop owner in the midst of a robbery. After only fifteen minutes in court for the murder, Evans was sentenced to be put to death by electric chair. Evans was put to death on April 22, 1983 in Yellow Mama, an electric chair built by a convict six decades before, and had not been used in over two.

In the article titled “I Won’t Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar. Here’s Why,” published by Harvard Business Review on July 20, 2012, Kyle Weins claims as a business owner of two companies largely reliant on writing that good writers are more intelligent, are better at doing things completely unrelated to writing, and pay more attention to detail. Wein’s overall goal of the article is to show the connection between employees with good grammar and good work ethic. Wein’s is backing up his zero tolerance approach to bad grammar by showing these correlations. Potential employees may have prompted him to write the article because they felt his grammar test was unfair.
Referring to an educational setting, when students are instructed to write a formal paper they often leave mistakes on their paper unknowingly or unaware of their mistakes due to the comfortability they have gained through online writing and instant correction, also known as autocorrect. Autocorrect is the software function that makes or suggests corrections for mistakes in spelling or grammar while typing. Frank Gannon captured the point concerning absence of proof reading in his piece English 99: Literacy among the Ruins by allowing the audience to visualize the decline of writing skills among youths in his college class. Gannon begins the piece by describing to the audience his new position as a college “philosopher” educating college students that were unable to learn in a higher-level English class due to the automatic assumptions that the students would be “overly challenged” (Gannon 215). As any individual would, the students in the class began to assemble into their own groups: “the bored looking girls, the jocks and the Bosnian refugees” (Gannon 216).

She discusses the concerns presented by many people about how texting language can transfer into writing, but through the use of personal experiences and credible sources she discusses how this is not true. Her use of multiple different studies and situations help boost her argument and allow the reader to truly see how students actually do formal writing. She presents a strong argument as to why those who believe students don't have the control and knowledge to write formally, instead of with text speak, are wrong.

Cullington argues that “texting actually has a minimal effect on student writing” (pg. 367). She addresses the opposition directly, even citing credible sources. However, she also cites credible sources with better information to support her point, and even conducts an experiment of her own.

Handlin started working at a very young age and entered Brooklyn College. Oscar Handlin at the age of 18 was accepted into Harvard University.
Article Analysis: The Importance of Writing Badly Bruce Ballenger’s article titled “The Importance of Writing Badly” takes a rather peculiar approach to addressing the issue of effective writing. The author eccentrically argues for the importance of ‘bad writing’ by describing different reasons to support his arguments. He argues that it is normal to apportion blames without understanding the root causes of poor writing skills. The author quotes different people who have expressed concerns about poor writing among students including his doctor. He proceeds by explaining why he would encourage his students not to concentrate on their poor writing experiences.
Not So Fast”, conducts her own study with a few colleagues to take notes on how students writing skills are changing. She decides to conduct another one twenty five years later to see how much the writing skills have changed since technology has been updated and became more available to students. She found that “students today are writing more than ever before.” Although we still have the same amount of writing errors as before, the patterns of errors are different. Many people argue that technology is only making our writing skill worse, this study helps to prove a different theory.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
Writing process is difficult to realize since it requires a lot of skills and knowledge. Definitely, not many of us can start writhing right away without having any problems such as grammar, vocabulary or organization. However, a person can become a better writer if he or she will practice writing every day and will pay attention to his writing problems. To become a good writer, I have to improve my grammar, follow specific steps in writing process, and avoid using similar transitional words. Grammar is the number one problem in the writing process and causes me a lot of issues.
My Writing Struggles After taking AP English III, I became better at organizing my papers, but realizing I need to improve my grammar skills and staying focused on my supporting points. All throughout my writing career, I was always thought to be an outstanding writer, especially using vocabulary above my grade range. Naturally, I would see myself as an excellent writer as well until I took Mrs. Bingham’s AP English II course. Mrs. Bingham always gave pointers, tips, and work to improve my class’s writing skills as a whole.
