Fathom a world devoid of complex weapons, accurate timekeeping, planes, and automobiles. This was the world before Leonardo da Vinci. Articles from Encyclopedia Britannica, Ducksters, and The Museum of Science plainly show that Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most influential men of the Renaissance. Da Vinci was such an important figure of the Renaissance because he created brilliant inventions that were ahead of his time, made stunning scientific observations, and created the most famous pieces of artwork known to man. An editor and author for the Encyclopedia Britannica described that “[f]or [Leonardo da Vinci], the study of the human body helped him to refine his notions of art as well as his notions of science. His anatomical considerations formed, in effect, the foundation of his orientation with how human figures interact with the world. This in turn informed his painting, making it all the more realistic in its expressiveness.” Da Vinci’s observations of human anatomy helped him refine his painting skills as more realistic and emotional. This demonstrates how da Vinci saw science and art as complementary rather than distinct areas, and thought that ideas formulated in one could and should inform the other. Additionally, the author from Ducksters goes on to say, “Many of his [notebook] drawings were on the subject of anatomy. He studied the human body including many drawings on muscles, tendons, and the human skeleton. He had detailed figures of various parts of the body including the heart, arms, and other internal organs. Leonardo didn't just study human anatomy either. He also had a strong interest in horses as well as cows, frogs, monkeys, and other animals.” This demonstrates that da Vinci was motivated by his unlimited desire for knowledge, which led him to not only study human anatomy but also animals.
