Mona Lisa’s elusive smile, Jesus and his twelve disciples during the last supper and the illustrious mistress holding an ermine, all great masterpieces of Leonardo Da Vinci. Many believe that Leonardo Da Vinci was and still is one of the greatest artists of all time. Even though he had his own style and own way of creating so did others of the Renaissance time period such as Michelangelo and Raphael. Why would he be known as the greatest artist of all time? Leonardo Da Vinci was born April 1452 in the small town of Vinci to Caterina who was a peasant girl and Ser Peiro who was an attorney and notary. There is little known about his early years though. What is known is that he lived with his mom for a little while and then at the age of five moved to live with his dad. He was primarily raised by his dad and his stepmothers. Da Vinci only received basic reading, writing and mathematics in terms of schooling, but his artistic talents were evident in his young years. He was born far before Michelangelo and Raphael who were famous artists of the renaissance time period. Vercocchio was one of the most renowned artists of his day and many other famous painters have connections to his workshops. At this workshop Da Vinci learned many technical skills like metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, drawing, painting and sculpting. Da Vinci even helped Vercocchio in the painting of “Baptism of Christ”. At the age of twenty Da Vinci was so skilled that he qualified for a membership as a master artist in Florence’s Guild of Saint Like, and there he created his own workshop.
