Leonardo DA Vinci is considered by some as the most intelligent man that has ever lived. His ideas are still studied and used today. Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in a farmhouse nestled in the hills of Tuscany outside the village of Anchiano, which is present day Italy. His father was Sir Piero and his mother was a young peasant woman by the name of Caterina. Leonardo was born out of wedlock and had family problems in his youth years. Leonardo was raised by his father and step mother until the age of five. At five he was sent to his father’s estate in Vinci where he lived with his uncle and grandparents. Leonardo is considered the archetype Renaissance man, a man who excelled in intellect, art, and social skills. He was taught basic education, including reading, writing, and math. At 14, Vinci began a lengthy apprenticeship with Andrea Del Verrocchio in Florence. Da Vinci learned skills in metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, drawing, painting, and sculpting. At 20, Da Vinci qualified for membership as a master artist in Florence’s Guild of Saint Luke. Leonardo was always extremely fascinated with flight. He has written over 35,000 words and 500 sketches pertaining to bird flight, the nature of air, and the flying machine. In 1505 and 1506 he devoted an entire codex entirely to the subject of flying. Most of his designs dealt with machines that had flapped wings that generated lift and propulsion. He preached the importance of lightweight structures that an aircraft would require having. Many of his ideas can be seen in the Wright Brothers’ experiment.
