Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper

The artist of the “Last Supper” is Leonardo da Vinci. During the renaissance it was the era where they had taken a step back on theology and advance forward on art and learn. This artwork was created during the high renaissance. Leonardo started painting the Last Supper in 1494 and finished in 1498. What’s so interesting about the painting is that unlike some of the earlier version of the last supper, the painting seems to me more simplistic. It takes out all of the distracting decorations and details, and focuses more on the expressions and gestures that each one of them shows. In Andrea del Castagno’s version of the Last Supper, it shows a lot of details in the painting. In Castagno’s version, he placed Judas (the traitor), on the other side of the table, while in da Vinci’s version Judas was placed on the same side of the table as the apostle. Which gives you the feeling that the rest of the Apostle doesn’t know yet. They don’t know who the traitor is. So it feels as if this is happening in their world. But in Castagno’s Last Supper, since Judas was placed on the opposite side of the rest of the apostles, it doesn’t feel as natural as da Vinci’s version. Also in Castagno’s version everyone has like this halo looking disc on their heads except for Judas, which makes it obvious on who the traitor is. But in da Vinci’s version, no one has a halo on top of its head, and Judas makes a lot of gestures that shows that he’s the traitor. Like how he’s holding a bag that has the silver coins that the romans gave him. Or how he’s reaching for the same bowl that Christ is reaching for. What I find this painting so interesting is all the gestures that each one of them shows, and the reaction after hearing the news that one of them will betray
