One of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous piece of art work is The Last Supper. Similar to any other art work, Leonardo uses many different art techniques to enhance his piece of artwork. His famous painting was made into a sculpture representation. Sculptures can be classified as relief, in the round, or environment. They can be viewed as a three-dimensional representation. The sculptures can differentiate depending on the way it is constructed. For example, a relief sculpture can only be seen on one side. A relief sculpture contains two types, low-relief and high-relief. It is mostly constructed through carving. If the sculpture can be seen from all sides, then it is classified as in the round. Environment sculptures can be identified as installation or earthwork. Installation is usually indoors while earthwork is usually outdoors. Earthwork contains natural materials. The four common ways to construct a sculpture is through carving, modeling, casting, or assembling. The materials used in carving is wood and stone. The material is either chipped, gouged, or hammered in a unique manner to make the sculpture. The process is known as the subtractive process since one is removing out the material of the wood or stone. Clay is used in modeling to make a specific type of sculpture. A good example of modeling are ceramics or the most commonly known, Play-Doh. During casting, a mold of the clay or wax is used. Any type of metal or liquid can be added to the mold to complete the sculpture. Assembling can be identified when the objects transform to make the final product.
