The book Witness, by Karen Hesse was a wonderful story about many different characters changing, because in 1924 the Klu Klux Klan known as the KKK, moved into a small town in Vermont. The KKKs are just a very Terrific, and was racist to a lot of people who just hate on many other races. This story surrounds 2 important character; Esther, and Leonora being on the KKK “target or hated list”, however those two weren’t alone. They faced these problems together, and they had each other when needed. A theme that shows up often in the book Witness is racism.
Discrimination doesn’t just occur from race. It tends to lean more in that way but in “witness” it also went into religion. Lenora’s closest and possibly only friend dear little Esther was discriminated by the fact that she was Jewish. She tended to be white but others looked at her different because of her personal beliefs. In chapter 12 when Calpurnia was stopped for bringing white children into the church, suggesting that there is equal ignorance and racism from blacks to white as there is whites to blacks. (Lee 119). In this passage, Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to her all black church while Atticus is out of town working. Lula is hesitant to allow Jem and Scout to participate in their service. Because African American’s are not allowed to attend white churches, she believes white people should not be able to attend black churches. Because Lula, and the rest of African American society are treated unfairly, she feels as if whites should be treated similarly to that of blacks.

It exposes the racism and prejudice in the town and how the effect you as an individual can make on the justice system based on your race. During the trial, Atticus tells the all-white jury that in the United States, everyone is supposed to be treated equally in court. However the guilty verdict shows that the justice system can be based especially against a group like African Americans for instance. “Our courts have our faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” (page 205)
