Worried Sick Reflection As I watched the “Worried Sick” video, I found many pieces of the research to be really interesting. By taking blood samples and testing it for the stress hormones, I think the scientists were able to get a great sense of what the different animals and people were truly feeling; all of the data collected was very reliable. As a whole, three concepts stuck out to me including the study conducted about the primate vs. the antelope, the effects stress has on the body, and the high impact of personalities on dealing with stress.

Mass media can have an effect on a person perception. It can change the way a person thinks or acts toward other people. Watching a particular movie or a television show can allow people to create assumptions about a certain group of people. Stereotypes are shown through the media in race, gender and social classes (Croteau 192). The people from the Middle East are one particular example of a race that is that is depicted in a negative light.
Then there is Hollywood which sexualizing not only women but also men. Women are seen for their bodies and used as sexual creatures while men are seen as powerful and in control. All of these mainstream media outlets affect each genders perception of themselves. They start to see not only the opposite sex as sexual objects but themselves. Research has linked sexualization in the media to the three most common mental health problems in girls and women: eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression.
One of the most influential factor is definitely the media. First of all, we need to understand what cultivation means. Cultivation is how media in general affects the individual, in their view of their social reality. By only showing certain points of view, television today has enough power to affect the public discourse and therefore the individuals train of thoughts (Shanahan and Morgan 1999, p.4). This may cause certain misconceptions about different aspects of life, than one’s own aspects, thus altering their opinions but that is not all it causes.
Stress involves interaction of the person and environment. To quote a definition: “Stress is an adaptive response to an external situation that results in physical, psychological and / or behavioural deviations for organizational participants” (Luthans, 1998). Stress has generally been viewed as a set of neurological and physiological reactions that serves an adaptive function (Franken, 1994). Traditionally, stress research has been oriented toward studies involving the body's reaction to stress and the cognitive processes that influence the perception of stress. However, social perspectives of the stress response have noted that different people experiencing similar life conditions are not necessarily affected in the same manner (Pearlin, 1982).
3. Review of literature 3.1 Stress and its types: Stress is an essential mediator of human behaviour. Immediate physiological response to any type of stressor facilitates survival of the species at its maximum. Despite of normal homeostatic regulatory mechanism, the stress responses can become maladaptive. Chronic stress, for example immobilization, exposure to noise, irradiations, psychological stress can leads to a host of adverse health consequences, including cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, obesity, depression and early ageing (McEwen et al, 2004).
More research needs to be done to show that there are other factors other than what was mentioned above that could shape ones idea. However, other people may have different opinions about it.
