Throughout the book Les Miserable, Jean does selfless acts that could potentially put his life in danger, however that did not stop him, he always seemed to do the right things. To start off, “The arm seized a loaf of bread and took it out… The thief had thrown away they bread… It was Jean Valjean” (23). Jean was not stealing the bread out of selfishness, it was to feed his sister and his sisters kids who were starved to death. Valjean and his sister were poor and could not provide the essential needs for his family. He was not stealing for himself but was stealing to help his family out. This was yet another one of his selfless acts that could’ve hurt him. Moreover, “Jean Valjean with gentleness of movement of a brother for his wounded brother, laid Marius upon the side of bank of a sewer” (321). Marius fell in love with Jeans “daughter” Cosette, and Cosette fell in love with Marius. However Jean did not approve, scared he may lose his little girl, Jean was being overprotective about Cosette, not allowing her to live her life. Jean did not want Marius and Cosette seeing each other. One day Jean found a letter that said Marius was gonna kill himself at the barricade. Jean went the barricade and found Marius injured. Jean took Marius away from the battlefield. Jean not only risked his life saving Marius, he also knew that he was going to lose Cosette because Marius was alive. Jean’s whole life was spent by going out of his way to help other people, as a hero would. This connects back to Jesus, because Jesus sacrificed himself to help the people.
