Saint Francis is well known in the fact that he loved all of creation. Now this is not just every human created, this is a love for plants, animals, the stars and everything gloriously given to us by God. The way that he loved creation differed from anything that anyone has ever witnessed in todays times. One example from Englebert’s book can give us a good structure on how much Saint Francis loved creation. On page 150, it quotes, “Because everything comes from the same source” and Francis was able to sense this kinship that all of creation shared under God. Saint Francis was on many journeys to spread the word of the Lord, but on one particular journey, his friars witnessed just how much love Francis had for creation. Francis and his friars traveled past Cannara and after their walk which lasted more than an hour, they noticed trees that were covered in birds. The birds began circling around and listened to his sermon. He said to the birds that there are many bonds that unite them all to God. He told them to praise the one that provides them with food that they do not need to work for. He goes on explaining how God preserved the ark in which the animals were aboard to save them, also how he kept the air for them to roam. After telling the birds this, Francis explains that for God to do this for them that God must love them and the birds should not be ungrateful but should praise Him. This was not his only story of preaching to God’s creations. According to St. Bonaventure, he reports more than fifteen incidents like this.
