Les Nains By Ghada Amer: Art Analysis

The piece of art that I have chosen is Les Nains by Ghada Amer. This piece has acrylic, embroidery, and gel on canvas. In the background, painted on the canvas, you can see two female figures embracing and kissing, and in front of them, embroidered in red, are a few dwarves and the face of Snow White, but they are hard to see and take may some time to find. I would like comments on this paper. I chose this piece, because when I looked at it, it resonated with me. At first glance, it just looked like it was simply a mixture of red string, black string and white paint, but after looking at it a little longer and being able to make out the separate parts and pictures that were portrayed, I felt like it told a story that I knew well. For years, I had no idea being gay was even an option. I was raised in a very strict Southern Baptist home, and was constantly told about the life, and more importantly, the godly husband I would share my life with when I got older. In recent years, more and more countries have legalized same-sex marriages, and women are gaining more rights all over the world. In this artwork, you the women in the background are very prevalent, and you can tell that they are two women. This to me shows that we are not allowing who society expects us to be to necessarily dictate who we are, and that we are more comfortably able to do that. This piece definitely reflects my human rights views. I believe that everyone has a right to be able to express themselves however they wish, and I believe that everyone has the right to a happy life with whoever they wish to
