Currently there is no federal law that universally and explicitly provides protection for LGBT, and few states have laws that protect them based on sexual orientations and gender identity/expression. The way I see making the LBTG a protected class as enhancing these laws on the books to protect everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender (physical or perceived) is to not only make it illegal to discriminate against LGBT on the basis of sexual orientation but to explicitly include transgender and transsexual people like the District of Columbia state does.
