The liberals were a group of people who wanted to give the power to the government or elected officials and they were made up of middle class people. The radicals were people who wanted to make their government a total democracy. They also wanted their government to practice liberty, equality, and equality brotherhood. Both the liberals and the radicals were living in the same nation and they both wanted some sort of reform for their government. Since they wanted a change they would of agreed on nationalism. Nationalism is where you believe in your country or nationality instead of a king or queen. When a nation gets its own independent government its known as a nation-state. Most of the people took this information and didn't complain about it but the liberals did not like the result. The liberals wanted to give the power to the elected officials but when Louis-Napoleon started to rule France, he made it so that they had a self-government. He promoted public works. The reason Louis-Napoleon became emperor was because of something called the Third Republic. This consisted of a Paris mob overturning the monarchy and creating a republic. This new republic didn't last very long. Some people wanted social and economic changes but other people wanted only political changes. This caused the sides to fight which resulted in having a basic Constitution created. The constitution said that they needed a strong president to be elected and was to be elected by the people. That strong president was Louis-Napoleon. The French people were a little worried about how good this new president would be. They also didn't know how long he would rule or how fair he would be. Since the liberals believed in the elected officials ruling everything they were pretty upset when Louis-Napoleon came in and changed it so the people had more control. That's not how they wanted it nor how they liked it. The only problem was that the czars didn't want to free the serfs because that would anger the people who owned land and the czars needed their support in order to stay in power. Czar Nicholas I decided he wanted to take over some of the ottoman empire but Russia's supplies weren't good enough for the countries troops which resulted in them losing the war against the forces of Great Britain, the Ottoman Empire, France, and Sardinia. Alexander II is Czar Nicholas's son and after that war he decided to make many reforms to Russia. Alexander and his helpers thought that these reforms would help him in the battle with Western Europe so that he could gain world power. The first reform Alexander had was freeing the serfs. Serfs were people who had to work on their Lords land. The problem with abolishing serfdom was that the poor communities ended up getting half of the farmland in the country instead of the individual poor people. Also the nobles or higher class people got the other half of the land but the government gave money to the nobles for their land while the poor peasant communities had 49 years to pay the government back for the land that they received.
