In the compassionate and heartbreaking historical fiction The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesal Meminger, a young girl who recently lost her younger brother at the age of nine, is sent to Munich in Nazi Germany to live with her new foster parents Hans Huberman and Rosa Huberman. Where they will hide Jewish friend Max Vandenburg in their basement away from the Nazis. Max Vadenburg and Liesal Meminger had a great friendship. Max Vandenburg and Liesel Meminger relationship was life changing for both of them. While in the Huberman household, Liesel and Max begin to have a talk. It's Christmas Day and Rosa Hubertman and Leisal have a book with a cover the says, “The Word Shaker a small collection of thoughts for Leisal members”. ( Zusak 299 ) At the time of this Max Vadenburg got sick a few days earlier and hasn’t been awake since. The book that Leisal was being handed was written and illustrated by Max talking about how she helped him. He told Rosa to give it to her when she was ready, so she thought Christmas would be good. This indicates respect from Max to Liesal because it takes a long time and very much hard work to write a book like this that's over a hundred pages. The deeper implication of this is that Max and Liesal bond is very strong. I think when people have strong and impactful relationships, they show affection for each other in many different ways such as good communication, trust, and being grateful for each other.
