Life is Fine is a poem written by James Mercer Langston Hughes; a poet, novelist and playwright. Hughes is known for his vibrant and insightful depictions of black life from the twenties to the sixties in America. Life is Fine expresses that life is precious and even though you may face many struggles, there is nothing more important than living the life you have been given. Hughes gives cold and height characteristics to associate them with death and hyperboles to exaggerate his tone, he also uses repetition, simile, tone, apostrophes, assonance and personification to portray this theme. The tone at this point in the poem is much more optimistic and happier than the tone from the first four stanzas. This is because now the poet has come to the realization that death will not solve any of his problems; life is hard and always will be but it is a gift that he has to accept with open arms. The author also uses an apostrophe by saying ‘you’ referring to someone or something we do not know about trying to show that people will see him struggle and cry but will not end his life when things get difficult. A rhyme scheme is present in this stanza and also throughout the poem that is ABCB and this helps the poem flow as well as emphasize certain aspects of this line. The image of the man and woman shows the man in therapy. He is receiving help for his problems so he does not feel suicidal anymore.
