Surviving in an extreme environment requires one to use different strategies in order to survive. In the “The Story of Keesh” Keesh goes out in the cold and hunts for a fair portion of meat himself after the council dismisses his request for additional meat. Then in the “Life of Pi” Pi is left alone with a tiger in a lifeboat in a deserted ocean after a storm, he does everything he can to survive. Both “The Story of Keesh” and “Life of Pi” contain characters that need to be not only physically but mentally strong in order to survive their extreme environments.
In the text “The Story of Keesh” Keesh is physically strong and goes and does anything in his power to get a fair portion of meat and uses his mental intelligence to develop an effective way to hunt. In the text “Life of Pi” Pi feels like he’s dying of thirst so he does everything in his power to get the can of water, “The tarpaulin hooks. Short, blunt, solid. I kneeled on the bench and leaned over. Holding the can with both my hands, I sharply brought it up against a hook. A good dint. I did it again.” (Martel 8). In my opinion Pi is a smart boy because Pi does anything to survive because he doesn’t know how long he will be in the deserted ocean. “According to the instructions , each 500 gram carton was supposed to last one survivor three days. That meant I had food rations to last me -31 x 3= 93 days!.”(Martel 80). Also, in the story Pi reaches a decision about how to deal with the tiger, “I had to tame him.” (Martel 92). Both “The Story of Keesh” and Life of Pi contain characters that need to be not only physically but mentally strong in order to survive their extreme environments.
