According to Yann Martel in Life of Pi, fear provokes flight to safety, desperation for hope, and illusion of desires. In Life of Pi, Pi and his family flee from Pondicherry to safety out of fear of losing their zoo to the unjust government. "Mrs. Gandhi could have personally bombed the zoo... too see his father sick of worry" (Martel, 87). Mr. Patel was frightened by the power that Mrs. Gandhi had over India and feared having his territory invaded and the risk of losing everything he had worked so hard for. For the same token, humans as well as animals have a certain flight distance and flee to find safety at the mere threat to invade it.
