In the tantalizing novel, Night by Elie Wiesel, the author uses figurative to convey his thoughts and emotions. There are two cauldrons of soup left laying in the middle of the road with no one guarding them and the starving jews are looking at them. The author uses the metaphor, “ Two lambs with hundreds of wolves lying in wait for them.” ( Wiesel 59), to vividly describe this moment in time in the book. This is an accurate comparison of the two cauldrons of soup to two helpless sheep and the Jews to hungry wolves.
Asterios Polyp is a very well developed, easily analysed, novel due to the extensive work on inner meanings. One thing that the book translates so well is a sense of character. It does this in various ways that most novels lack the ability to do; such as color, text, and general art. On a given page with word bubble dialogue most readers can pick up the recurrence of text being askewed to particular fonts accordingly to certain people. Less may see that these font style represent them as a person.
Night mainly contains similes, metaphors and hyperbole. First, the simile that most stood out to me was “He had some seven hundred prisoners under his command, and they all loved him like a brother”(Wiesel,63). This simile, in a way, compares the officer to the other officers because it shows he treats his prisoners better. It also says that “Nobody had ever endured a blow or even an insult from him”(Wiesel, 63). So we know that he cares enough about those people not to hurt or insult them voluntarily.

Fire is often a symbol of pain and suffering and is particularly evident throughout different personal accounts of historical events. Throughout Night, by Elie Wiesel, Wiesel gives an accurate account of his life throughout the Holocaust while using different motifs to symbolize the horrors of the Holocaust. Wiesel uses motifs to show things without actually saying them directly. Throughout Night, the motif of fire is portrayed as a symbol of Hell on Earth and usually indicates that a bad thing will start to happen and is shown in multiple moments including Mrs. Schaechter, the Crematoriums, and the Death March.
As Elie Wiesel wrote of the death march to Gleiwitz, he used narrative techniques such as descriptive language and similes to illustrate how gruesome it was to take part in. From the first sentence Wiesel wrote in chapter six, he used descriptive language to explain the appalling conditions. “An icy wind was blowing violently” (85, Wiesel). The words such as icy, blowing, and violently are used here to imprint a picture of what might have been a blizzard during the march in the minds of the reader. However, Wiesel continues to use techniques throughout the chapter to provide a more vivid picture.

The horrific event that included the mass murder of 6 million Jews and other "undesirables," such as Gypsies and homosexuals, known as the Holocaust, left few survivors, but many of those that made it out were silent for a long time. Why relive the past if it is so horrible that one does not even want to think about it? Once some survivors decided to talk about the Holocaust and their experiences, another problem arose.

Wiesel did not truly recognize himself as he immersed in the depths of the mirror, this is what Elie implied when he said “...

During the Holocaust, the SS would often force prisoners to witness the deaths of fellow prisoners, to scare them into obeying the SS and to show the prisoners what would happen to them if they did not follow orders. In the memoir Night, Elie Wiesel uses symbolism and metaphors to show the theme that suffering will weaken religious faith.
Pi encounters a French castaway; the castaway foolishly enters Pi’s lifeboat and is eaten by Richard Parker. After Richard Parker kills the French castaway, Pi starts using the leftover flesh for his own uses, such as fishing: “I will confess that I caught one of his arms with the gaff and used his flesh as bait” (322). In his isolated state, he thinks of nothing but survival and how he will receive his next meal. Soon after, Pi even goes to the extremity of eating the flesh of the mangled dead castaway. This deed of cannibalism barely registers in his mind as he admits, “... I ate some of his flesh.
This idea may be based off of the fact that he had to kill the fish in order to survive, and to keep Richard Parker (the tiger) alive as well. Following the time of killing the flying fish (which Pi uses as bait) he catches a dorado, and explains that the food he is catching is for Richard Parker. Pi states, “It was for Richard Parker and he would have dispatched it with expert ease” (Martel 89). Through a religious aspect, it can be seen that Pi did not necessarily change is values, but had to go against his morals because of the specific scenario of survival. This may be true; however, Pi directly mentions that he is changed from the time of killing the flying fish to taking the life away from a beautiful dorado.
