Anne Frank once wrote in her journal “Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right path, but the final form of a person's character lies in their own hands.” In Yann Martels novella, Life of Pi he starts with some knowledge about animals because his parents have taught him. Without Pi’s parents he would not know the knowledge about animals that he had because he would have not grown up and listened to his parents and the wisdom they preach about animals to Pi. The survival of living on the boat with these beasts however is all up to Pi and the experiences he has over time. I was sixteen years old, a harmless boy, bookish and religious. Now I have blood on my hands.” (183) To then doing this later in the novel “I reaped dead fish from the ponds. With the hatchet I hacked off a large mass of algae and worked a rope through it, which I tied to the boat.” (283) The two quotes represent and symbolize the development of Pi throughout the text. In the beginning he was scared to kill a fish and didn’t want to use a hatchet. But as he went through his journey he became more experienced. The journey itself served as a valuable classroom, teaching Pi patience, observation, and adaptability. With growing confidence, Pi emerged as a resilient individual, demonstrating the power of adaptation in the face of adversity.
