Limitless is a novel written by Alan Glynn, which includes the story of Eddie Spinola and his journey into discovering the true capacity of the human brain. Eddie is trying to take control of his life by taking a “designer drug” marketed towards increasing brain activity. This drug allows Eddie to reach new levels that normal humans would typically never be able to reach. Shown through Eddie’s actions and thoughts, the purposes of the novel are revealed, such as what can occur when one reaches their full potential, the effects of drug abuse, and the greediness of the powerful.

He discusses his marriage as a “drug marriage” due to the fact that while he was married to Melissa they were both heavily addicted to drugs. Eddie shows heavy remorse for this part of his life and has immense regrets, this shows similarities to many people in society who are addicts. The purpose of this aspect of the novel is to shed light on how heavily drugs can impact someone’s life. Eddie’s entire marriage was drug-fueled and it eventually caused the downfall of it. Eddie could’ve had a happy marriage, but the drugs eventually caught up to him. This leads to how drugs can rewire a person’s brain. Eddie’s past caused him to easily accept the MDT that Vernon offered him when they bumped into each other. Eddie took the drug with almost no hesitation. He asked very little questions about it and even though it helped him in the beginning, later down the road the MDT had such a detrimental effect on his life. He is able to meet with people who have millions of dollars at their disposal. This allows him to experience a completely different way of living. During this time, Eddie becomes greedy and he only wants more. Eddie believes that he can only go up from where he is, which in a sense he does, but it doesn’t last for long. He also experiences first-hand how easy it is to get things handed to you if you have connections in their world. Eddie was a nobody, however, through making friends he is able to make it up to the top. On the other hand, Gennady is a prime example of greed. Gennady stole the MDT pills in Eddie’s kitchen and made big lifestyle changes after taking it. His greed stemmed from the fact that Eddie owed him money, so he believed that he could do whatever he wanted to Eddie to get more pills. However, his greediness ultimately led to his death because he believed he was invincible. Gennady’s death reveals that no matter how rich or powerful you are, nobody is immune to
