The main characters are Lina mayfleet, doon harrow, mayor cole, looper windly, and granny. Lina mayfleet loves to run and hopes to become a messenger and draws about how the outside world might look like, she also must take care of her sister poppy. Doon harrow is serious and usually focusing on important tasks and loves bugs but has anger problems. Mayor cole is a greedy person who hordes all the food supplies of the city and is mean, hypocritical, and abuses power. Looper windly is a sketchy guy and keeps things to himself.

Jeanne DuPrau’s novel, The City Of Ember, tells the story of two good friends who work together to try and escape, their home town, Ember. They face many challenges and problems that try to slow them down and make them fail their goal. For example Lina’s younger sister Poppy has no one to watch her and Lina is smart and thinks about that and solves another problem. Determination and intelligence make escape possible for Doon and Lina.
Lina and Andrius had a little connection between the both of them. They were all going to a work camp in Siberia. People were split up into all different kind of groups. Everyone was forced to fight for their own lives. Lina loves to draw, so she draws little clues to try to pass to her father because she wants her father to be able to know where the rest of his family is.
Growing up can be the easiest part of childhood, but what some must face is very different what other children growing up handle. Antonio, a young boy around 7 years old, lives in Mexico with his mother and father. His parents are from two different types of families. An elderly woman, who goes by the name Ultima, guides Antonio as a mentor when she moves to live with his family. Ultima is considered a healer and witch by different people throughout the novel.
Powaqqatsi and The City of Ember Comparison It is a natural human philosophy to act like others in the environment we are living in. Some people may feel if one does not conform, they will be looked down upon by others. The movie Powaqqatsi directed by Goddfrey Reggio shows many scenes of how people's actions within a community revolve around conformity. The book The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau, also shows many examples of a society that is set in its ways.
Ember City was built and not to be left for 200 to 220 years. The mayor is provide with instruction of what to do when the 200 years or more are over. The box has a timed lock and is to be opened when the time comes. The box will be passed down from mayor to mayor over the time period. As the time went on people got desperate and grew tired of waiting.
The book begins, with the main character, Lina a young inspirited artist and her family getting arrest. Her father was separated from her family and taking from her home town Kaunas, Lithuania. Some examples of her hazardous behavior is playing war-like games with the other kids. Lyra was also being on the roof and exploring. The Master likes to do what is best for Lyra and same for the Gyptians. The Gyptians made her to do all sorts of jobs like cleaning The Gyptians also made sure Lyra did the job.. Lyra starts to like the Jordan college scholars and the gyptians as both groups are nice to Lyra and treat each other nicely.
Furthermore, Estrella’s angsty and confused character continues to be revealed with the description of her actions after that. Luis is working at the junkyard when a girl around his age drives up to ask for a part for her car. Luis stares off to the side and begins to space out. Luis describes the girl saying, “She stood in the sunlight in her white sundress waiting for his father, while Luis stared. She was like a smooth wood carving. Her skin was mahogany, almost black, and her arms and legs were long and thin, but curved in places so that she did not look bony and hard- more like a ballerina. ...
After doing so and being gone for some time, the daughter realizes that she misses and loves her mother very much. However, when they meet up again, the same sort of physical fight happens. The daughter is then sent to stay with her grandmother. After more time spent apart, both parties realize their love for one another. Lola also realizes, after talking to her grandmother, that she is so much alike her mother.
After twenty one years of peace passed, another war was unleashed onto the world. By now, everyone was using their new favorite toy to use in this destructive war, the airplane. With how efficient planes were in the First World War, everyone started to use them heavily in the Second World War and the evolution of the plane begins again.
