The main characters are Lina mayfleet, doon harrow, mayor cole, looper windly, and granny. Lina mayfleet loves to run and hopes to become a messenger and draws about how the outside world might look like, she also must take care of her sister poppy. Doon harrow is serious and usually focusing on important tasks and loves bugs but has anger problems. Mayor cole is a greedy person who hordes all the food supplies of the city and is mean, hypocritical, and abuses power. Looper windly is a sketchy guy and keeps things to himself.

Jeanne DuPrau’s novel, The City Of Ember, tells the story of two good friends who work together to try and escape, their home town, Ember. They face many challenges and problems that try to slow them down and make them fail their goal. For example Lina’s younger sister Poppy has no one to watch her and Lina is smart and thinks about that and solves another problem. Determination and intelligence make escape possible for Doon and Lina.
Lina and Andrius had a little connection between the both of them. They were all going to a work camp in Siberia. People were split up into all different kind of groups. Everyone was forced to fight for their own lives. Lina loves to draw, so she draws little clues to try to pass to her father because she wants her father to be able to know where the rest of his family is.
Growing up can be the easiest part of childhood, but what some must face is very different what other children growing up handle. Some people may feel if one does not conform, they will be looked down upon by others. The movie Powaqqatsi directed by Goddfrey Reggio shows many scenes of how people's actions within a community revolve around conformity. The book The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau, also shows many examples of a society that is set in its ways.
Ember City was built and not to be left for 200 to 220 years. The mayor is provide with instruction of what to do when the 200 years or more are over. The box has a timed lock and is to be opened when the time comes. The box will be passed down from mayor to mayor over the time period. As the time went on people got desperate and grew tired of waiting.

After doing so and being gone for some time, the daughter realizes that she misses and loves her mother very much. However, when they meet up again, the same sort of physical fight happens.
