Colleen conducted herself in a professional and ethical manner throughout her placement. As a health care practitioner I would first recognize the patient's concern and try to assure them that we will do everything in our power to help them. Secondly, I would gather information from the patient such as their symptoms, and order and run tests. Thirdly, I would evaluate results from the patients tests and symptoms and determine the diagnosis. Fourthly, I would consider any implications that may result from the patient not understanding the results and perhaps find any better alternatives in assisting the patient. Professionalism or the lack there of, does not only affect the patients or family members that a nurse may interact with, but also their fellow employees. There are a number of factors that contribute to professional behavior in a workplace environment some of which include, accountability, respect, and trust. A professional in any working environment has to show that they are accountable. “Accountability is accepting responsibility for one’s actions” (Saunders, 2015, p. 61).
Being a nurse is not always as easy and picture perfect as people paint it to be. A nurse is expected to act perfectly professional, even when tears, anger and all-around emotions are begging to come out.
