How did Lipstick Ascending on Caterpillar Tracks serve as a rallying point for Yale University students?
This work by Claes Oldenburg was placed right next to the Yale University President’s House on campus and in front of a World War II sculpture honoring fallen students. Students would ironically conduct anti-war protests here. Furthermore, this work was intended to symbolize the anti-war sentiments of Yale University Art School students. This work served as a gathering point for the discussion of artistic and political issues. As Yale University began admitting women to the university for the first time the year before (1969), discussions about gender equality occurred here too.

It was made of an inflatable vinyl balloon that could be inflated to attract attention from the audience before a speaker spoke from the sculpture's platform. However, it was eventually replaced with a hard one because the soft one could not endure the weather and thus began to deteriorate.

From the end of January 1912 to April 1912, Henri Matisse lived in Tangier, Morocco. He was fascinated by how the local population would day-dream for hours whilst gazing into goldfish bowls. Like other Europeans who visited North Africa, Matisse admired the Moroccans’ contemplative and relaxed lifestyle. For Matisse, the goldfish symbolized his search for peace and an ideal paradise in which he could thrive and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
