The photograph 's title, Migrant Mother identifies the mother, as a migrant worker inferably a farmer outside of her home, as the majority of Americans were as they suffered through the tragedy of the Dust Bowl. Migrant workers traveled from farm to farm picking vegetation and other crops at starvation wages (Boundless). The mother and her children 's location in a tent support the suggestion that they moved frequently and did not possess a home of their own. The mother herself wears unmatched clothing: a plaid shirt underneath a linen coat. The coat is frayed at the sleeves barely extending to her elbows.
On October 24, 1929, also known as ‘Black Thursday’, one of the greatest economic and social crisis in the United States of America begun. On that day more than 12 and half million shares of stock were sold, which was triple the usual amount. Next, over the following 4 days, the stock market prices fell 23 percent. Afterwards, the Americans had to face suffering and obstacles for the next 10 years. In 1933, the unemployment had risen from 3 percent to 25 percent of nation’s workforce and those who were able to keep their jobs faced harsh reductions in wages.
This painting is a powerful image that represents the reality of many Afro-American families of the time. Contrary to “Good Night Irene”, this painting shows a more two-dimensional perspective in which the shapes and lines are sharper. The members of the body, such as arms and neck, look longer than they should be, but that rather than look artificial creates a continuity in the picture. As well as in the last painting, this one is very realistic and natural, the shapes are not ambiguous or dubious so for the admirer is easy to identify what the artist wanted to express. In terms of technique, the strokes and lines in “Good Night Irene” are very defined, and in “Lynch family” are too.

Dorothea Lange photographed some of the challenges that African Americans faced during this time. She was a photographer who always focused on individuals and wanted to portray a specific message . In June of 1937 she photographed an African American man down in Mississippi. The caption was, “Negro on the Aldridge Plantation, Mississippi. ‘We know our white folks (planters) and just what to say to please them ’”.

As a photographer myself, the theory of punctum is not unknown to me; however, the application of the concept of punctum towards the perfomativity of a photograph is unchartered territory. The photograph I chose to analyze is Dorothea Lange’s renowned portrait Migrant Mother, which is a Great Depression-era photograph featuring a migrant farmer, and is among the most famous photographs from this turbulent chapter of American history. The raw emotion in the mother’s face, paired with her body language and grimy appearance, captivates viewers; however, it is not the mother that makes this image so powerful to me, but rather, the turned away children framing their mother. This detail adds a new dimension to the portrait for me.
The setting mainly took place in south of Soledad, California, near the Salinas Valley, during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. Salinas Valley had many substantial farms during the Depression. This was essential because colossal farms employed a massive number of workers, often up to hundreds. Since farm workers with no steady employment, would often head to these communities, it was logical that Salinas Valley was George and Lennie’s destination. Migrant farm workers were perfect examples, to highlight the solitude and loneliness engendered by the Depression. These men had no place to call home, and had only a few belongings to call their own.
