Application Paper: Listening I decided to do this activity with my fiancé. I asked him what was on his mind as of right now and he said our wedding. I casually asked him what he was thinking about and if he could tell me more about it. Colton and I from the start, have always been great listeners, especially when we are talking to each other. For the most part, his reaction was positive. He is so excited for the day to come. His only concerns were time and money. A typical response for anyone who is planning a wedding. I found this activity extremely helpful. It made me conscious of my nonverbal cues as well as my overall listening abilities. Listening Activity The first type of listening, I found, was harder than the second one. For me, I use gestures and head nods when I communicate with others. It was hard to just sit back and listen on a subject that’s so important to my fiancé and I. I stopped myself from saying anything just by listening. It was hard to do this, but I believe I got more out of the conversation just by listening alone. I noticed that I do need more practice watching my posture and eye contact, however. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been a shy person. I have become better through experience, but it’s still a skill I need to work on. Another thing I could work on is not getting sidetracked by the minor details. When I have a conversation with someone, I look at all aspects. This is sometimes distracting and I often end up not knowing what happened in between those thoughts I had. I end up missing parts of what the person I’m communicating with said. This did happen while talking with my fiancé, but since we’ve talked about it so much, I felt like I was still able to listen to what he had to say and fully grasp
