After listening to Claire’s presentation on her high school experiences, I found that she was a very strong speaker who used many presentation techniques to complement her presentation. Claire’s techniques were very effective in helping the audience understand her ideas and what was going on in the presentation. There were 4 general types of techniques that Claire used to amplify her ideas and sway the audience. The first techniques would be the movement and usage of her hands and body. Claire had a very wide range of speech dynamics that allowed her to put emphasis on different ideas and at times shocked the audience with the volume in her voice, allowing the audience to interalize her feelings. Claire also effectively expressed her emotions, whether her voice was shaking from grief, had conviction through anger, or was upbeat because of joy; Claire’s emotions were easily grasped from her excellent usage of voice to expression emotion. Emotions such as the feeling of sadness was incredibly important to complement the feeling of devastation that sprung from the events Claire experienced. Losing some of her hearing was an incredibly frightening event that in order to be fully understood by the audience, needed to be accompanied the emotional trauma that Claire went through. By stretching out key words and phrases, Claire expressed the importance of certain events and feelings. When discussing her initial experience of learning that she was hard of hearing, Claire attributed it to “failing”. Claire stretches out the word failing to express just how scared and ashamed someone may feel if they lose their hearing. This emphasis allows the audience to internalize the feeling and connect with Claire on a deeper level of how she felt ashamed at that time. Claire used sound effects to express her emotions and make her anecdote more exciting. To amplify her feelings of joy and happiness throughout the rollercoaster of her anecdote, Claire at one point clapped loudly and sharply to emphasize her realization of an idea. This caught the audience's attention due to the clap being loud and expressed Claire’s excitement of thinking of a new solution to her problem. The audience also becomes excited because they are interested to hear what Claire’s big epiphany was. Some other uses of sound such as saying “Pop!” and “Ta-da” also snatched the audience’s attention and engaged the audience.
