The book, True Notebooks, by Mark Salzman, is about the author volunteering at L.A.’s juvenile hall to teach young offenders how to write. The teenage boys in his class are high-risk offenders, they are in custody for murder or other serious crimes. This book is a great read for anyone, especially writing students, who can gain inspiration from these troubled kids who express themselves through their writing. This book should be required reading in Professor Marquez’ English B50 class because it is captivating, moving, and it can motivate a struggling writing student.

Silence, in a dramatic movie to make someone sit on the edge of their seat wondering what is about to happen. Silence, at a funeral of a loved one to grieve for the loss.
Personal Literacy Narrative Reading and writing is a tool everybody needs in their lifetime the basic reading and writing skills are used on a daily base no matter what field you plan to study. Reading and writing are taught at a young age. I personally was taught by preschool I noticed on how I grew with my writing and how I became a better reader and writer throughout my life I personal love reading and writing it’s a way for everyone to express themselves through their choice of words. Everybody learns how to read and write differently some students tend to be stronger than others, personally speaking I feel I tend to be higher in reading then writing.

English was doomed to be my least favorite subject. At this time though I didn’t know I liked writing and reading, so I just got by.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
My Literacy Narrative There I was, four years old, in a tiny square room with the walls decorated with colorful alphabet letters. Literacy Narrative Essay Well, there are many things that made me the reader and writer I am, only a few important events had huge impacts on me. Events such as; teachers constantly correcting my grammar, not being able to pronounce certain words, and a soccer injury that made me a pick up a book. These surveys could be used when studying expository texts to give students’ text to analyze that they are personally connected too. In narrative writing it is crucial to give variety of writing prompts, so students do not feel locked into one prompt, and can choose which one connects with their personality and memories best. The author stresses the importance of having a mentor text from the teacher for students to reference multiple times, and to give students something to compare what their writing should be similar to when they are done. Teachers must write these texts along with students, so that students are given the opportunity to see the process and formatting as it develops and grows into the mentor text. Integrating student choice into an ELA class requires an extensive amount of time and effort, but when implemented properly, it can do wonders for student engagement, motivation, and performance, and always pays off in the

As a kid, I was not particularly fond of reading, but over time, my perception of reading and writing started to change. My journey to literacy has been a valuable experience that has helped me grow as a reader and a writer. Some experiences include reading as a kid, learning to work with dyslexia, and growing my writing skills in my high school engineering program.
Over the last fifteen years, I have grown mentally and socially. I credit my growth to my ability to analyze and understand the world for what it is. Social imagination is the use of information to understand the world and ourselves for who we are. Possessing the quality of mind that can develop reason and the capacity to shift perspectives are the basis of social imagination (Mills 2000). As I mentioned in reflection one, I came to realize that my way of thinking is what helped me overcome living a poor lifestyle.
EDUC 1211 New Literacies for Teachers Hattingh Jeanine: 1054720 Mr Juniel Matavire A3 22 April 2015 In this essay I will be discussing the different literacy practices of the British Asian girls and the Welsh girls, in relation to their reading for pleasure, and their digital literacy practices, and how these relate to their identities as bilingual and bicultural girls. Both the British Asian and the Welsh girls read for pleasure, and both group of girls enjoy reading in English than in their non-dominating languages, however both groups of girls give different reasons for their preference to reading in English. Looking at the similarities in their literacy practices, the British Asian girls enjoy reading novels in English from popular teen authors, and in the same way, the Welsh girls also enjoy reading English novels from popular authors (Jones, 2006).
But, as I look back into my steps of learning literacy it came to mind how difficult writing essays were. The biggest piece of the puzzle is to not be afraid to express my opinions and feelings through writing. INTRODUCTION For the purpose of this assignment I have selected the film Freedom Writers (2007). As a teacher in a post-primary DEIS school, this film was of particular interest to me for its high-school setting and the disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds of the students. Freedom Writers is a movie adaptation of Erin Gruwell’s non-fiction book Freedom Writers Diary: How a teacher and 150 teens used writing to change themselves and the world around them (1999). The film follows Erin Gruwell, a newly qualified and enthusiastic English teacher, as she navigates her way through school politics, prejudice, racism and personal circumstance to help a group of at-risk teens to fulfill their potential.
