Part 13 of The Odyssey depicts how much Athena favors Odysseus and his family. First of all, Athena was determined to help Odysseus get back to his ordinary world. With this intention, she warns Odysseus about the suitors in his home, seeking his wife’s attention and trying to kill his son as they believed that he, Odysseus was dead. Athena soon turns Odysseus into an old beggar so that no one would come after him. Doing as Athena had told him to, he rests at Eumaeus hut while she goes to fetch Telemachus.
The Odyssey and Speak both have many common archetypes. The characters suffer, and they go through rebirth and they also go through a sense of loss. In Speak Melinda was raped by one of her classmates and was keeping it a secret her entire freshman year, in the Odyssey, Odysseus was trapped on Calypso’s island for years and was forced to lay with Calypso. The characters’ rebirth in The Odyssey and Speak are both very similar; Melinda finally realizes it is okay to tell someone if something like that happens to her, and Odysseus finally makes it home and is able to feel clean again, and to be with his love Penelope. In both readings, the main characters go through a sense of loss, Odysseus is physically lost at sea, and is trying to make it back home, and Melinda has lost sense of who she is and doesn’t feel herself anymore.
Journal 1 A: Homer has a very unique method of beginning the Odyssey. He starts the book in the action. After we hear about Odysseus's situation in the first passages Homer starts to focus on Odysseus's son, Telemachus. Telemachus is coming the age where he will take over his fathers role as household master that he left unfilled approximately twenty years ago. He is already showing signs of maturity when he ordered the suitors to leave and eventually got them legally ejected.

The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
Hospitality is a common theme in The Odyssey and is essential to the story’s plot. During this time period, the Greeks showed hospitality to common people. Throughout the story, this virtue is valued by many, but some chose not to obey the laws of hospitality. Due to this, hospitality demonstrated a separation between people worthy of reward or punishment. For example, Penelope’s suitors lacked hospitality.
In today's society, as well as in the Odyssey, violence almost always seems to be the answer, in reality violence is almost never the answer. For example, in the Odyssey when Odysseus returns to find men trying to marry his wife, he confronts the men and says, “You forced yourselfs upon this house. Fight your way out. ”(958) In another passage in the Odyssey, Odysseus shows unnecessary violence while receiving advice he asks, “Can I pass charybdis, or fight off Scylla.”(930)
