Effective diction, literary devices and structural devices are the most important element of a novel. In the passage of the novel titled The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness is developed deeply by different kinds of devices. In the authors opinion, the passage in the novel is about Todd's hatred towards the town and how it is developed by effective diction, literary devices and structural devices.

Effective diction has a played a huge part in the development of the passage. Firstly, in the passage there is an example of effective diction and how it adds effect to the surroundings. Firstly, In the passage there was an example of personification. For example Todd thought to himself that Aaron's hand looked like a "smiling fist.”This is personification because it is giving an inanimate object the "fist" characteristics such as smiling. This drives Aaron's character forward showing that he isn't friendly and is satisfied with beating Todd. Secondly, there was an example of a Simile in the passage. "Language young Todd" he says "Binds us like prisoners on a chain." This is a simile because it is comparing how language can bind someone like a prisoner on a chain. The effect is to show Todd that language can be harmful. This can also be foreshadowing because later in the book he gets in to a conflict between Viola and him because of his bad-use of language. Lastly, this passage represents Repetition.For example Todd thought o himself when he spotter Aaron "He never comes out here, men never do, they have their reasons, men do, and it's just me and my dog only ever here but here he is and I don't don't don't wanna know." This is repetition because he repeats the words don't three times. This affects the plot showing that no one ever comes here but he is here showing that there must be something strange going on, this also creates suspense. Firstly, a structural device in this passage is repetition. For example when he gets up after being punched he narrates "Still so raging with anger and hate that I don't even look round to see if Aaron heard my noise. I don't look around. I don't look around.”This is repetition because he is repeating the phrase "I don't look around." This affects the passage as a whole because it is showing that he is afraid of Aaron but he is so angry that he doesn't even care. This basically creates the rest of the mood for Todd in the passage. Secondly, a structural element that is also present in this passage is a Run on sentence. For example Todd narrates when Aaron leaves that I'm shaking from the charge to my blood at being hit, shaking from being so fired up and so surprised and so angry and so much hating this town and the men in it that it takes me a while till I can get up and go get my dog again. This has an effect on the whole passage because he is saying how much he hates the town and everybody in it. This is also effective because it is in one big sentence and the use of "and" is emphasizing his anger and frustration.Lastly, another structural element in the passage is a sentence fragment. Aaron's noise says after he punches Todd "the saint chooses his path." This shows that Aaron is a very religious man. This affects the passage as a whole because this shows that he is extremely strict and he hit Todd
