“The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” written by Katherine Anne Porter, is about a grandmother who is in denial that she is about to die. And “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor, is about a family that goes to visit family in Tennessee but are brutally murdered before they get there. These two stories share many similarities and differences in both the characters, and conflict.
In both "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O 'Connor and In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, the author asserts the idea that villainy spawns from the villain’s less than ideal circumstances of his past. In the novel In Cold Blood, Capote presents Perry as a villain shaped by the unfortunate experiences of his childhood. The first instance of these experiences can be seen in Tex’s letter to the Kansas State Parole Board. Tex describes Perry’s early childhood as rather light-hearted, up until the point when his mother “wanted to go to the City and live a wild life” (Capote 126).
At the end of ¨A Good Man is Hard to Find” there is the strange scene where the Grandmother says to the Misfit, “Why you're one of my babies. You're one of my own children!” (O'Connor 30) and then she reaches out and touches him. He “sprang as if a snake had bitten him and shot her three times through the chest.
Today, I’ll be introducing you to a couple of foreshadows in the story, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor. For those that don’t know what foreshadow means; it means to give hints to what’s going to happen later on in the story. Also, I’ll be explaining the tension and suspense in the foreshadows. The First foreshadow I’ll be talking about is when the grandma didn’t want to go to Florida.
During the period of modernism, artists focused on how the world is a moral waste land. A portrayal of one’s moral waste land is reflected in Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. The protagonist is only concerned with herself, which caused her to put her family in dangers way. Even in the face of her family being murdered she was only concerned with herself. Because of her selfishness, her family was destroyed.
In the story, A Good Man is Hard to Find, a family is taking a trip to Florida from Georgia. The author makes use of foreshadowing to show that some type of harm will come to the family. In the end of the story, the family perishes. The use of foreshadowing events in the story keep it quite interesting and suspenseful.
I was unfazed by the ending of the story of “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor. The story did not startle me because it did not contain any increasing suspense as the story progressed and was filled with unpleasant characters that made me not care about their wellbeing. The story contains foreshadowing and irony that helps lead up to the expected death of the family by a known murderer so it was no shock when such events occurred. None of the characters in the story obtain any likeable characteristics which desensitizes me from their murder and could even be karma for the way they’ve lived their lives.
In Flannery O’Connors “A Good Man is Hard to Find” the reader is introduced to a family who undergoes a tragic incident that would have been avoided. As the grandmother of the family got her son, wife, and three children to agree on a road trip which they thought would be fun. But it was not until the grandmother realized they were not where she thought she was in Tennessee and they suffered through a brutal car accident. The family managed to be okay up until the murderer on the news known as the Misfit shows up to where the car accident occurred. The Misfit and his two other partners then choose that they will execute the family since they had the opportunity handed to them.

The tale that gives a name to the book, "A Good Man is Hard to Find", tells the story of a family leaving for Florida. But the road is marred by a couple of killers. It's a chilling story, sharper because O'Connor builds in all serenity, mixes humor in a family vacation transiting into a tragedy that does not end happily ever after.
The bizarre twists of fate of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Conner leaves the reader perplexed and reveled to a preconceived ending of good prevailing against evil this gives the story its unique and arousing end which most stories do. O’ Conner uses literary proficiency such as foreshadowing, symbolism, eccentric characters, In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” The Grandmother character is brought to light as self-centered and manipulative. She tries to do everything in her favor and sway situations to fit her own interest regardless of other characters. She tries to manipulate Bailey not to go to Florida but Tennessee, seizing at every chance to change Bailey’s mind, “seize” isn’t just a casual attempt.

2. For this week’s reading, I chose “A Good Man is Hard to Find” written by Flannery O’Connor. For the short story, the author describes in details what the characters do and provide great detail on the places. I think that all the details so carefully provided for us are used to make us, readers, dive into the story and feel like we take the trip with the characters.
