M&M’s are colorful sugar coated chocolates that have stolen the hearts of generations in over 100 countries. M&M’s were modeled after Forrest Mars, owner of the Mars candy company found while he was in Spain during the 1930s. During the Spanish Civil War, Mars observed soldiers eating small chocolate pellets covered in a candy shell, which prevented the candies from melting in the soldier’s pockets in warm climates. This is what inspired Mars to create the candy-coated chocolate in 1941. The company’s famous slogan, “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand”, reflect this concept.
Kathryn Stockett successfully uses rhetorical devices to get the reader to feel and understand the perspectives of the protagonists. Stockett uses pathos, ethos, and logos in her book, since the book about social injustice. The topics in the book range from inequality of the sexes to social classes and racism, Stockett is successful in getting the reader to reflect while reading the book and the themes of the book have a clear presence. We see Stockett use ethos and pathos in the very first chapters when we learn that Hilly doesn't like Minny and Minny doesn't want to say why at first, but the incident with Ms. Holbrook was affecting her chances of getting a job because of the influence Hilly has over this suburban society. In some instances where Stockett uses ethos, pathos is also included in her writing.

Politicians call for missile defense projects. Many defense projects have failed and cost not only the government but taxpayers over 50 billion dollars. Lee Fang, a writer for The Intercept, shows how ineffective these programs have been in the past. The persuasiveness of Lee's argument in his article “Politicians Use North Korea H-Bomb Fears to Pitch Wasteful Missile Defense Projects” is based on a logical approach using facts, (logos), an emotion approach trying to rally us up (pathos), and on his credibility and the creditability of his sources (ethos). Lee's appeal to our logical (logos) side is based on facts.
In Kurzweil’s The Age of Spiritual Machines, one of his main arguments is that one day, in the near future, artificial intelligence will exceed the intelligence of humans. He predicts this largely on the idea of the intelligence of evolution. It took evolution millions of years to make the human being that we are today and it only took humans a few thousand years to create technology. Since you are considered smarted if you are able to do something faster, humans are smarter then our creator, evolution.

Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.

In our current era, people use these same rhetorical strategies and appeals in writing to persuade readers to take action or take a side on a subject/idea. Rhetorical strategies and appeals are methods to get a reader to understand the purpose and idea of what the author is trying to persuade. When trying to influence an audience there are four elements of rhetorical appeals: logos the appeal to logic, ethos is the appeal to the credibility of the writer, pathos is the appeal to emotion, and kairos the timing of the work. Its intent is to help structure a collaborative classroom environment between classroom teachers and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) including ideas on how to structure communication between classroom teachers and SLPs to increase student performance. The ideas are logical and the article acknowledges many limitations and constraints for collaboration between teachers and SLPs while reminding the reader of the importance and gains that can be made through a partnership. In the article, “Some Teens Start College Work Early Via Dual Enrollment” written by Joanne Jacobs,from the U.S. News and World Report Education, discussed a current path that most high schoolers are taking that will lead them to college success. Jacobs uses ethos and logos to prove the successfulness of the Dual Enrollment Program. The program offers students the opportunity to experience college life, to gain both high school and college credit, and to gain confidence. In most states, high school students who want to take a college class need to attend the class in a community college with regular undergraduates.

I have to make 3 separate papers for a reliable source, unreliable source, and comparison of two sources that would be presented in class. This project was a great learning experience because I get to learn and identify the differences between reliable and unreliable sources. From this project, I really struggled with finding the right unreliable source because it was harder to find on the search results.
