J. Reuben Appelman’s book, While Idaho Slept, truly emphasized his skillful writing when he utilized several challenging writing techniques to help enhance his writing and make his novel more entertaining. Creating a nonfiction novel is not an easy task; it requires the skill of being able to lay out all of the details that occur while keeping the audience interested and clear-headed. In Trimble’s book, Writing With Style, he clearly states, “Not only must the individual thoughts be clear, but even more challenging, they must follow a logical sequence.” (Trimble 9). When saying this, he is clarifying to his readers that a talented author must not only present their thoughts clearly, but order them in an understandable sequence of events. He refers to the death of Bethany when he wrote this passage and tries to explain to his readers that her murder was committed strategically and silently. However, he properly structures these words to make the order of the event easier to conceptually understand. The author presented the information by starting off with a comparison to something that a majority of people could comprehend, and he followed with the details of what actually occurred, while simultaneously relating back to the first part of his sentence. Furthermore, by sequencing his words in such a way, it created clarity in his readers, which is also a necessary talent that Trimble references when he says, “Clarity is the indispensable characteristic of good prose.” (Trimble 9). It is important for the author's point to be clear to the reader because it allows them to make connections outside of the book and take their understanding to the next level.
